Ruins of the Third Reich:
Wewelsburg Castle

A unique architectural example in Europe, the Wewelsburg Castle near Paderborn in central Germany dates back to the early 17th Century. Originally a summer residence for the nearby Bishop of Paderborn, Wewelsburg was chosen by Reichsfuhrer SS Heinrich Himmler in 1933 to become the site of a new SS "Reichsfuhrer School," explicitly for the training, education and ritualistic ceremonies of the SS "Schutzstaffel" (Protective Units). Although it remains unclear exactly what rituals were held at Wewelsburg between 1933-45; much of the plans for the castle rennovations and its ultimate position in the world of National Socialism remain intact.
