Ruins of the Third Reich:
Kiel

Capitol of the State of Schleswig-Holsteins at the Southern end of the Kieler Fjord, is the port of Kiel. Kiel has been an important German naval port since the first German U-boot was commissioned there in 1906. Kiel founded the first German U-boot flotilla in October 1910 and a year later, the U-bootschule (U-Boat School)in 1911. In 1936, the sailing competitions for the Olympic Games were held on the Kieler Fjord. The Second World War left the beautiful port in economic ruin. After the reconstruction and authorization for establishing a German Navy, the city began to develop again. The U995 (submarine museum) U-boat is located on the beach at Laboe, near the German Navy Museum and Kriegsmarine Memorial.
