Ruins of the Third Reich: Auschwitz Auschwitz was the largest National Socialist Concentration Camp during World War II; located about 60 km (40 mi) west of Krakow, Poland. Constructed in spring 1940, the camp was used as a primary extermination camp since 1941. The entire complex was made up of 3 separate camps. The main camp (Auschwitz I) was built between May and July 1940. Auschwitz-Birkenau (Auschwitz II) where most of the prisoners were interned; was built in Winter 1941-42, about 3 km away from the main camp. Auschwitz-Monowitz (Auschwitz III) was constructed in 1941 as a forced labor camp and administered nearly 40 sub-camps.
